🔹Coal activated carbon is a porous adsorption material made from coal (such as anthracite, lignite, bituminous coal, etc.) through crushing, molding, activation and other processes. It is widely used in environmental protection, industry, energy and other fields due to its abundant raw material reserves, controllable costs and adjustable adsorption performance.
🔹Activation process: Physical activation method: water vapor or carbon dioxide is introduced at high temperature (800-1000℃) to etch the carbon skeleton to form pores, with a high proportion of micropores (commonly used in coconut shell charcoal).
Chemical activation method: adding activators such as zinc chloride and phosphoric acid to catalyze the decomposition of the carbon structure at low temperature (400-600℃), and the mesopores are more developed (commonly used in coal-based charcoal).
🔹Pore ​​classification: Micropores (<2nm): Specific surface area accounts for >90%, which determines the adsorption capacity of small molecules (formaldehyde, heavy metal ions).
Mesopores (2-50nm): It is the diffusion channel of adsorbate, which affects the adsorption efficiency of large molecules (dyes, VOCs).
Macropores (>50nm): It accounts for <5%, which is mainly used for material transfer in the initial stage of rapid adsorption.
🔹Adsorption performance: Iodine adsorption value: measures the degree of micropore development, standard value ≥800 mg/g (high-quality coal-based carbon can reach 1100 mg/g).
Methylene blue adsorption value: reflects the mesopore adsorption capacity, used for liquid phase decolorization (such as printing and dyeing wastewater requires ≥180 mg/g).
🔹Physical strength: Abrasion resistance: granular carbon needs to be ≥90% (to avoid powdering during transportation), and honeycomb carbon compressive strength ≥0.8 MPa.
Chemical stability: acid and alkali resistant, wide pH range (2-12), but easily oxidized at high temperatures.
